In Step Five, we admit both our addiction and the character defects we found in Step Four. We
admit them to ourselves, to another human being, and to our Higher Power. The courage and trust
displayed in working this step are building blocks. This inventory is an honest evaluation of what
you have learned about yourself and your disease. Humility means knowing who you are. “We are
only as sick as our secrets.” Sharing our secrets brings us out of the hopelessness of isolation.
